Filene’s Basement Bridal Gown Sale
July 5, 2007
Chances are you know about the Filene’s once a year (twice a year in Boston) basement Bridal sale where once a year the price of gowns are priced hundreds even thousands of dollars off the price. The well-known sale was even featured in an episode of “Friends” when Monica was looking for her wedding dress.
The event has been coined “The Running of the Brides” by some media outlets because it is reminiscent of Spain’s Running of the Bulls in that Brides and their friends charge into the basement frantically searching for dresses. Dresses are usually all snatched up about one minute into the sale. Brides grab as many dresses as they can carry and then try the dresses on to find the perfect one. Some brides have been known to partner with other Brides and trade snatched dresses.
Gowns at the sale are one of three prices: $249, $499, and $699. Brides from all over the United States and the world make the trip just for this Bridal event. Some Brides wait in line for first dibs at the sales racks. Although all of the dresses are quickly devoured off the rack at the start of the sale, most dresses are returned to the racks at Brides find they pulled the wrong size. Filene’s also estimates that only about a fourth of people in line are buying dresses and the rest are support. So, there are plenty of bargains to be had the whole day of the sale.
Filene’s operates stores in 8 US states and the District of Columbia. Want to attend a sale? You can find upcoming Bridal events at Filene’s Basement’s website.
