Polygamy and polyandry
June 29, 2009
Polygamy is the practice of a man taking more than one wives simultaneously. While such a practice was the norm in ancient societies, this custom is looked down and disapproved in the modern societies, especially in the age of women’s liberation where women are considered on par with men.
Polygamy however becomes necessary at times when the wife is incapable of producing children, or due to some other factors. In societies that allow polygamy, men however tend to take more than one wives if they do not happen to be satisfied with the first wife for any reason whatsoever. Others take up a second wife if they travel to a distant location or the likes.
The converse of polygamy is polyandry which means women having more than one husband. While an institutionalized form of this concept is frowned uponm by all cultures at all times, the recent spread of the concept of “free sex” is in fact an diluted version of this concept.
