Why do we marry a person?

March 9, 2009

I just came back from a province wherein I attended a wedding and acted as one of the principal sponsor. It was a good, lovely and memorable wedding indeed. The bride is very lovely in her white gown and her beauty came out naturally . The groom can be easily identified because he wear coat while all other sponsors is in a typical Barong Tagalog.

We arrived in the church one hour ahead of the schedule. It gave me enough time to observe and hear the on-going mass. Suddenly, I found out that the on going mass carry a “mass wedding” affair. I think, at least five couple participated on this mass wedding complete with their respective entourage.

The homily of the priest during the wedding focuses on the reason on what will be the basis marriage. Both the bride and groom where asked on what made them choose to marry their respective parter. They both replied “Because I love him/her.” A perfect answer indeed for a good question.

But is it really the good answer for that question? Is there another way to answer the question? I believe there is because, when I came cross that question during my wedding, I answered differently. But there is no wrong or correct answer for this question. What matters most is that you answer this with honesty.

The following are some possible answer for the question “Why do we marry a person?” When ask, just choose what doyou think represents your feeling.

1. I choose to marry him/her because I love her/him
2. I choose to marry him/her because I feel safe with her/him
3. I choose to marry him/her because we have good chemistry together
4. I choose to marry him/her because he/she is perfect for me.
5. I choose to marry him/her because he/she loves me.

As far as I remember, the answer I had when I was asked why I decided to marry wife is “because i know she loves me”. I believe she answers the same too. I think when your partner loves you, he/she will avoid to do things that might hurt and cause sadness to his/her partner. I also remember when one of my wife’s relative approached me during our wedding and told me to “Make my wife happy!”. I replied “Yes, I will always try to make her happy!”. I really want her to be happy since I know that she loves unconditionally.

You may not be asked to answer this question now especially if you not yet ready to get married. But be ready for marriage may comes unexpectedly. Ready to answer the question ” What made you decide to marry him/her?”
