Wedding Day Make-up Tips

January 12, 2008

Your wedding day is one of the most important events in your life. Even if you don’t usually wear make-up, there are reasons for using it to enhance what’s captured through photographs. The proper shades, formula and application can give lasting results for a full day of celebration.

One way to choose what type of make-up fits your personality and style of wedding, is to look through bridal magazines. Bookmark or cut out photos for reference, those you are comfortable with.

Some brides-to-be hire a professional make-up artist and some prefer to do their own. If you choose to have your make-up done professionally, make sure the artist listens and communicates well. You need someone who fully understands what you are striving for.

The shades you use in make-up should be based on whether you’re having an indoor or outdoor wedding and also the specific lighting. For dim-light settings, shades can be more bold. For outdoor weddings, you should aim for a natural look. The intention is to enhance your features without make-up being obvious, while coordinating with your wedding attire.

If you choose to do your own make-up, following are some tips:

* Do a practice run several times before your wedding until you find what you are comfortable
with. Ask friends or family for their opinion.

* Have some photos taken by a friend or family member to see how the make-up looks in
various lighting.

* Use a very light moisturizer to prepare your face for foundation.

* Don’t use heavy foundation. It tends to look cakey in photos. Use lightweight foundation,
but enough coverage to hide blemishes. Matte or dewy, but not oily, foundation works well in
photographs.

* If you need concealer, choose a formula that goes on smooth and coordinates well with your
foundation.

* Add definition to eyes with liner and shadow, but don’t be too bold. You want definition, but
subtle. To get this look, an appropriate shade of brown will work well. Black may be too dark
unless your skin tone and hair are dark. For eyeshadow, stay away from anything too trendy
such as blue, pink, bronze. More natural colors work best.

* Use waterproof mascara to alleviate dark streaks when you shed those tears of joy. You can
also use regular lash-lengthening mascara and then use waterproof mascara for the last coat
to get a more voluminous look.

* Lipstick should be delicate in a shade of pink, rose or mauve. This also depends on your lip
structure. If your lips are thin and small, a lighter shade works best. Those with fuller lips can
use a darker shade. To prevent lipstick from running, first line lips with a pencil in the shade
of your natural lip color. Choose lipstick in a formula that has staying power.

* Blush will help contour your face structure. Cream blush will blend in well with your
foundation and give a beautiful and natural glow.

* To finish the look, brush on loose powder very lightly. This will set your make-up and give
you a polished look.

* Don’t pluck eyebrows on the day of your wedding. Often there is redness after plucking.
Pluck a couple of days before your wedding to prevent this. If needed, use a light touch of
an eyebrow pencil to give more definition to brows, but don’t go too dark.

* Don’t forget to bring your make-up bag the day of the wedding in case you need a few
touch ups.

There is so much variety when choosing make-up, from inexpensive to very expensive. Make-up comes in an abundance of shades and formulas. It’s also important to keep your skin in prime shape months before the ceremony. Do your research, plan ahead and you will look stunning on your wedding day!

What will the hot wedding trends of 2008 be?

January 12, 2008

I just came across a list of wedding trends to watch out for this coming year. The trends I liked best were:

Green Weddings
…for couples who want to do their part to help the Earth. Green weddings can incorporate such things as invitations made of recycled paper, conflict-free diamond jewelry and honeymoons to eco-resorts.

Interactive Planning
Everyone has a wedding website nowadays, so why not make your wedding planning interactive? Set up a bunch of polls and have your guests vote on various aspects of the wedding (e.g., first dance? cake flavor? favors?).

Cover Bands
How cool would it be to have a Guns N’ Roses cover band at your wedding? Or… maybe that’s just me. :) Swing orchestras, Latin ensembles, and many other types of cover/tribute bands can add a special feel to a wedding.

Sample Stations
Wine and cheese station, chocolate station, champagne bar… yum!

Vintage Visions
More couples will aim for an old-fashioned look with dresses, suits and rings that are either genuinely vintage or cleverly designed to seem that way.

Other trends included: Switching up one’s gown or hairstyle halfway through the event, ’steel gray’ as an accent color, and having weddings at home.

Shoes for the short ones

January 11, 2008

I’ve had this discussion recently with a colleague who is, just like me, very short. In particular when the groom is pretty tall, wanting to wear high-heeled shoes on your weddine seems to be quite a natural wish–you don’t want your pictures to show too much of a difference, for instance. So high heels it is. But let’s be careful about those, because they could very quickly turn into a nightmare.

First of all, make sure that you have a spare pair of elegant flat shoes all ready for the reception. It is extremely tacky to end up barefoot because you cannot stand being in your classy high-heeled shoes one more minute, and even if the dress is long enough to hide your feet, it is never very pleasant to know that things are what they are, whether someone else notices it or not.

Do not forget try on your shoes several weeks or even months in advance, if you already have them–and not only for a few minutes, but for a half-day. This is to ‘make’ them first, and also to ensure that you will be used to them enough to stand in them for part of theday at least. No need for shoes that make you go through a living hell barely ten minutes into the ceremony.

Finally, if stilettoes or similar shoes are too much of a pain, going for pump-like shoes is also an option. As long as you can find a model that is elegant enough and does not look heavy, they will make things easier while still giving you those extra few inches you need.

After all, it’s one day in a life only, so a woman might as well feel comfortable and classy in her shoes.

Bridal Glasses?

January 9, 2008

OffBeat Bride answers a reader’s question about wearing glasses at her wedding. The reader says she can’t wear contacts because of an eye condition. I’ll be wearing glasses at my wedding because, uh, I wear glasses. I know it’s not common for brides-to-be to wear specs with their white dress, but I wear glasses for every other day in my life.

OffBeat Bride suggests:

Seems like there are two strategies you could use for wearing glasses at your wedding:

1. “My frames are a part of my face!” (ie, stick with the glasses you’ve got)
If you love your frames and feel like they’re really part of your face and identity, or are planning a low-key, mellow wedding, stick with the glasses you’ve got. If you’re a make-uppy type, you could go for extra dramatic eye make-up under your usual specs to add some flair. Dude: when was the last time you tried quality fake eyelashes? Bridget Bardot in spectacles anyone?

2. “My frames are part of my wedding outfit!” (ie, get new ones)
Wearing a pair of one-of-a-kind frames that aren’t your usuals would make a great visual impact on your wedding — I say go for frames that coordinate with your dress. To be even more daring and dramatic, go for frames that coordinate with your flowers. Let your glasses be an extension of your bouquet: a visual splash! You could also go super light and understated — ie frameless lenses that barely show.

What Hobbies Did You Pick Up From Your Fiance?

January 5, 2008

Miss Milkshake on Weddingbee has a cute story about how her fiance accidentally made her a gamer. What hobbies or traits did you pick up from your intended?

When I was younger, Super Nintendo was the coolest thing, and I’m sure we all had gameboys (heck most people our age, guys and girls alike, have the nintendo DS), and donkey kong country and all the sequels rocked my world. But then the video game industry introduced the concept of 3D, which soon dominated, and I couldn’t maneuver my little Mario guy in a straight line, quickly became dizzy, and gave up. Gone were the days of running across the screen, from left to right, jumping on bad guys. After dating Mr. Milkshake, I came to learn these were called “platform games.” When we first started dating he trained me to play a soccer game, Winning Eleven, and he was surprised at how good at it I became. Somehow he managed to suck me into playing Resistance with him last year and with the recent releases of Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3, I can officially play “first person shooters.” Not well enough to play against any hardcore guys online, but well enough to get a few kills in when him and I play together….

Bridezilla, one of my new favorite sites, (it’s heavy on the giggles and light on words like wed-iquette), is running a Top Ten Weird Weddings of 2007 countdown. Today’s number 10, a zoo wedding with, uh, flying bats, will be hard to top. I can’t wait to see what that other 9 are.

There are some exquisite ski resorts located all through the United States. You can find the New England States Ski resorts in the north-eastern section of the country in places such as Vermonth, Mass., Maine and so forth. There are also some great sk resorts in the rockies.
